About nursing jobs and vacancies
They are sometimes challenging and very often demanding, and yet jobs in nursing offer a rewarding and stimulating career choice. Nursing jobs are for those who enjoy caring for people but who also enjoy being pushed, tested, stretched and driven. Nurses say their job is inspiring, fulfilling and exciting. Many say they just can’t imagine doing anything else.
The beauty of variety
The various settings for the wide range of nursing jobs available in the UK mean there are opportunities for all kinds of people and skills sets as you’ll see here at Nurses.co.uk. There are those nursing jobs candidates who like to work in a team-centred environment, and those who prefer to work more autonomously. For anyone considering a nursing career this is an industry that offers an incredible amount of choice.
‘Variety’ becomes a key refrain for those already working in health nursing jobs too. In fact, the most common comment about nursing jobs from nurses themselves is that they love the variety, on a daily basis, that is presented to them. Whether it’s medical nursing jobs or mental health nursing jobs - working as a nurse is very unlikely to become a mundane, sedentary desk job!
Settings for nursing jobs
In terms of the setting, jobs in nursing can broadly be divided into two types: clinical nursing jobs (think hospital nursing jobs) or community based nursing jobs (think social care - nursing home jobs for instance). So, nursing jobs can see you working for a number of different employers too: primary care trusts (PCTs), local health authorities, community trusts, schools, HM Prison Service, charities, voluntary organisations, private companies, social services. You’ll see all of them on Nurses.co.uk of course!
Naturally, it’s not always (or ever) quite so black and white. For instance, general nursing jobs are typically set in a ward in a hospital. And yet mental health nursing jobs can be set in a hospital too... on most days - but your support responsibilities within that role may also regularly take you outside the hospital and into the community as you try to give a mental health client their future back by accompanying them to a sports facility or the cinema or the shops. Think hospital nursing jobs... but also think ‘variety’ and ‘change’. Conversely, community nursing jobs are often carried out autonomously by district nurses visiting clients at their home. But sometimes they will be required to work from an office in the clinic or surgery, organising case-loads or developing care plans.
Variety is clearly one of the major benefits for those considering nursing jobs; consider the gulf of difference between A&E nursing jobs and care home nursing jobs (jobs in nursing homes).
So given all this variety, what do all nurses share? And what skills do nurses of all flavours need in order to ably carry out their many and various nursing jobs ....?
Skills required by those in nursing jobs
At Nurses.co.uk we have considered this to some great detail... and concluded that the personal skills required for all registered nursing jobs do actually tend to be broadly similar. Whether you’re hoping to apply for acute, clinical NHS nursing jobs or military nursing jobs for the armed services, there are uniting factors.
As you’d expect, you’ll need to be caring by nature and interested in others, and passionate of course. Arguably, there are no jobs with a more human focus than nursing jobs. Perhaps the skills required in clinical nursing jobs and even mental nursing jobs are a little more obvious than those with a more social or community support emphasis.
These specialist ‘social care nursing jobs’ for want of a better term (such as learning disabilities nursing jobs) require applicants with therapeutic skills and job-seeking candidates who are adept at counselling, able to take decisions and make swift judgements. You will need to be able to consider the environment of your mental health client, the potential risks they face in their daily tasks. You’ll be considering what assistance and care might be needed to allow them to lead a normal life. In these nursing jobs, teaching and listening will be as important as a headstrong streak... an ability to stand your ground can come in handy if you’re facing the challenging behaviour presented to those working in prison nursing jobs (sometimes called forensic nursing jobs on Nurses.co.uk).
Nursing jobs are about improving the quality of people’s lives. That is done in an acute setting or a social setting. But in both communication skills, confidence, being able to remain calm in challenging environments, empathic qualities, observation skills, an alertness to changing situations, adapting to people’s many different attitudes and demeanors.... all are as important for theatre nursing jobs as they are for community nursing jobs.
Finally, do you love learning? What’s your team ethos like? Will you be able to impart your knowledge to less senior and more senior team members? Are you persuasive but also a great listener? Yes? Then medical nursing jobs and surgical nursing jobs and all specialist nursing jobs are for you!
Oh, and you’ll require a Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (NMC). To get this you’ll firstly need your nursing a degree (or diploma - but these will be phased out by Sept 2013). Nurses.co.uk has taken time to list these courses for you - see our nursing courses section.
Nursing jobs opportunities
There isn’t an industry with more opportunities. From carer or support role, (via qualifications and registration) you can pursue highly specialist nursing jobs. Consider that the NHS is the UK’s largest employer, and that nursing jobs make up the largest single career group within it. And right across the UK too. Nursing Jobs UK is a huge industry - on Nurses.co.uk you’ll find 100s of nursing jobs London, and then, at the click of the mouse, 100s of nursing jobs Scotland, Irish nursing jobs, nursing jobs Australia or nursing New Zealand. There are a galaxy of career paths within nursing jobs. Specialising is something you’ll be asked to consider as early on as during your degree course.
What’s great, too, is that you can obtain your degree or gain specialist nursing qualifications while working and getting paid (if you’re in NHS nursing jobs). Training while on the job to gain further specialist skills is a fantastic option - for instance, you can train to move into oncology nursing jobs, research nursing jobs, paediatric nursing jobs. Secondments also offer nurses a great opportunity to try different branches, to broaden horizons! Challenge yourself in different nursing jobs.
You can also climb up the career ladder in terms of management - nursing manager jobs come in a variety of shapes and sizes: ward manager jobs, modern matron jobs, senior practitioner, consultant.
So, once started, if you wish you can just continue specialising, learning and developing your nursing careers. And as your circumstances change you can adapt your career - you can take agency nursing jobs, investigate part time nursing jobs, leave the NHS and try private nursing jobs. It’s all up to you! And let us here at Nurses.co.uk let us know how you get on!
A quick note to finally point out that we have two other sites which may interest you if you’re looking more generally for medical jobs. Healthcarejobsite.co.uk lists medical jobs including doctor jobs and pharmacy jobs.
